First-hand accounts of legendary baseball games found in ProBaseballArchive.com
Access tens of thousands of historic newspaper articles about famous players, celebrated teams and scandals
ProBaseballArchive.com, a free service of NewspaperARCHIVE.com, contains more than 50,000 full-image newspaper pages with first-hand accounts about famous players such as Joe DiMaggio and Willie Mays, thrilling World Series games like Don Larsen's perfect game in 1956 and stories about dramatic scandals such as the 1919 Black Sox and Pete Rose. In addition to historic newspaper accounts of the game dating back to the 1800s, researchers can also find current articles on players like Alex Rodriguez, Derek Jeter, Roger Clemens and Barry Bonds.
"The archive was designed for sports enthusiasts to read about baseball's early days or to relive their favorite baseball moments such as the home run battle between Mark McGuire and Sammy Sosa," said Matt Reinhart, graphic designer for the website. "As a big fan of Major League baseball, I find myself spending hours looking though articles in Pro Baseball Archive."
With the use of Adobe Reader and Optical Character Recognition technology, sports enthusiasts can quickly obtain articles about baseball by searching with key words or dates. For example, to find newspaper articles about Babe Ruth, researchers can just type in "Babe Ruth." To find articles about a specific game, a specific date can be selected such as August 12, 1929, the day after Babe Ruth hit his 500th home run.
"We've all heard about Babe Ruth's legendary called shot in the 1932 World Series, so it's fascinating to actually find an article from 1932 that details the game," said Jeff Kiley, General Manager of NewspaperARCHIVE.com.
Along with the newspaper archive, the website contains a brief timeline of baseball history told through newspaper articles. For example, the timeline reads that in 1939 Lou Gehrig's streak of 2,130 straight games ended when he voluntarily benched himself. Next to the timeline is an article from the Wisconsin Rapids Daily Tribune on May 3, 1939, that details Lou Gehrig's decision.
Researchers interested in finding more information about baseball can also go to NewspaperARCHIVE.com where there are 2,582,637 newspaper pages about the sport. ProBaseballArchive.com is part of a series of free archives sponsored by NewspaperARCHIVE.com that includes MartinLutherKingJrArchive.com, AbrahamLincolnArchive.com, WinterGamesArchive.com, TitanicArchive.com, AsbestosArchive.com and CollegeBasketballArchive.com. NewspaperARCHIVE.com, the largest newspaper database available online, is owned by Heritage Microfilm and began in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, in 1999.
